White Screen Of Death

I was trying to edit the functions.php file in my template when my site disappeared. I tried everything to bring it back, but I could not access my login screen or the actual blog. I had my databases backed up so I didn’t lose any posts, but I messed up while restoring my site. I saved copies of all the php and css pages that I had modified, but two very important folders were deleted forever. I accidentally overwrote my image directory and my plugin directory with the original template folder.

The problem was, I had to completely reinstall wordpress. For some reason, I was unable to simply overwrite the function.php file with the original nor could I fix the problem within MySQL..I guess I am just not good at leaving well enough alone. No problem really.

I am going to take this as an opportunity to redesign my site. I have always hated Under Construction pages but I have little choice in the matter.

Free Father’s Day E-Cards & Childhood Cutouts

Father’s Day is just around the corner (June 21, 2009 to be precise). As a child I used to make cards for my Dad on Father’s Day, but as I grew older I could never see the use in supplementing the real gift of a necktie or aftershave with a $4.00 hallmark card. And it just seems silly to keep making cards out of construction paper, magic markers, and Elmer’s glue past the age of ten. Well, thankfully the digital age came along and made things a bit easier.

When I first began using technology to save money, it was by replacing the standard purchased cards with cards made in photo-editing programs. The only problem, is that besides using precious ink it took so much time to make a custom card that usually didn’t look much better than the construction paper cards from yesteryear.

I don’t remember when I first began sending e-cards, but they seemed almost better than the Hallmark variety. Not only does an e-card make a great compliment to a real gift, it allows the receiver to be surprised twice in a day. I always presented my Hallmark cards at the same time as I was giving a present. With E-cards, the first surprise arrives in their inbox and then the tangible gift is presented to them later.

The only problem with e-cards is that as with most things, we always had to choose between quality and price. Sure, free e-cards have been around for as long as their pricey counterparts.  But most sites that offer free e-cards  only offer low-quality cards for free in order to lure unsuspecting customers to their site where they can be presented with more expensive options.

GotFreeCards to the rescue!! This company allows users to personalize and send high quality animated e-cards for almost any occasion. GotFreeCards has hundreds of cards to choose from and they only take a few moments to select, personalize and send. They also allow you to upload photos to create and print your own free printable cards at home. Best of all, everything is free and no registration or download is needed.

I discovered Got Free Cards at a wonderful blog called Life in a House of Blue. This blog featured the free e-card site in a review that also included an Amazon  giftcard giveaway!

One Life In A House Of Blue reader will win a $25 giftcard, and out of approximately 15 blog giveaway winners, as additional $100 giftcard winner will be chosen. The giveaway lasts until midnight, June 18th. To participate, just click here and follow the instructions given by Life in a House of Blue momerator, Susan.

Using Got Free Cards is easy enough for a small child to do. So Moms, have your children send Dad a Got Free Cards e-card for Father’s Fay.. and save the construction paper for homemade neckties.

This is a very impressive giveaway from an awesome site. I have read articles at TheMommy-Files, but this is the first contest I have entered at the sites. This is because a laptop is something that I want dearly, and the sleek, ultraportable, Toshiba Portege A-600 is better than (more…)

Installing WAMP & Drupal

Today, I installed my own WAMP server. This is a group of programs including Apache, PHP, and MySQL. In the past, I would ftp files to my webhost and assume that I am not going to mess up anything. With my own virtual server, I can test out sites before they go live. This is important to me, because I am starting a new job this Saturday working as an independent contractor for a local web design firm.

Installing and setting up WAMP was quite easy. In fact, I now wonder why I didn’t do it long ago. It worked well out of the box, but like anything, I had to configure it to fit my needs. You see, when I transfer my (more…)

Race Sparks Cartoon Controversy

The NY Post published a cartoon by artist Sean Delonas, depicting a chimpanzee that had been shot to death by two police officers. One of the officers turns to the other and says, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Now, Al Sharpton and many of his people are up in arms demanding a boycott of the Post and (more…)

TVLand Needs To Rediscover Its Purpose

Today, I watched a vintage episode of The Brady Bunch on television. While viewing the Bradys’ classic shenanigans, I began thinking about how cool it would be to have a television channel dedicated to old TV shows. The channel I was watching airs a handful of old shows occasionally. But it is mostly dedicated to reality programing and the intermittent movie. The channel I was watching is called TVLand..hmmm.

Why does a channel called TVLand play movies? Why does a channel called TVLand dedicate itself to reality programming? Movies and Reality are not the first (or second) things that (more…)

Talking Turkey Bagged In Feburary

Until yesterday, I had never cooked a turkey. My wife and I always end up going to relatives house, and we have never brought the bird. So for my first turkey I chose to cook a 22 lb behemoth.

I would have started smaller since our meal will only be shared three ways (and our toddler just turns his nose up at turkey), but this was (more…)

CakeBlast Oscar Picks For Feb. 22, 2009 (part 2)

I just read a story about this years Oscar nominees being told to expect a “big surprise” this year. It seems that the Academy is concerned about the low ratings it received in 2008. I seriously think that the low ratings were due to (more…)

CakeBlast Oscar Picks For February 22, 2009

I will not pretend that I have seen all the movies up for Oscar consideration. Going to the movies is a rare treat, and , camcorded theatrical films are horrible quality (not to mention illegal) so I do not download them. Anyway, it is fun to pick winners based on (more…)

Power Outage

I have been unable to write for several days due to a power outage. I stayed with my parents who have a dial-up connection, which makes the internet no fun at all.

Anyway, if anyone else was caught in this storm I would love to hear the stories! Most of Kentucky is still out of power. Half the trees in my S. Indiana neighborhood are destroyed by the ice. But today the temperature reached 49 degrees. This is insanity…2b cont.
