How 2 Write Symbols On Forums

Oct 29th, 2009 Posted in Blogging, Computers, Internet, Technology | 3 comments »

I ♥ symbols because they are a cute and fun way to personalize text. I used to enjoy putting them in comments and forum messages. Then, somewhere along the line I quit doing this. Maybe I decided it was more practical to say what I wanted without cutesying everything up?

Lately, I have been going to lots of forums and comment forms and I never see people using these symbols. This symbol deficiency makes me want to go symbol CrAZy and start putting the fun back in functional!

I realize that the only reason many people do not use symbols when they write is because they don’t know how. If that is the case, prepare to smile because I am going to tell you!

The first thing to realize is that the method of adding symbols is different if you are doing it in a program, than it is if you are doing it in a comment. In a program such as Word or Photoshop you can create tons of symbols using wingding or dingbat fonts. If you do not have the fonts installed or just want a quick way to make a heart you can use the alt key along with the numeric keypad to the right of your keyboard.

The regular number keys will not work to create symbols; only the right-side keypad. The great thing about creating symbols with the alt-key and  numeric keypad is that you can create these symbols on practically any comment form, message board, or guestbook!

Smiley face ☺ is Alt, 1

Heart ♥ is Alt, 3

Diamond &diamonds;  is Alt, 4

Club ♣ is Alt, 5

Spade ♠ is Alt, 6

Bullet • is Alt, 7

Music Notes ♫ is Alt, 1, 4

Sun ☼ is Alt, 1, 5

If you want to create symbols for a website using html, you must use special characters (or an image, but that is another topic). Go to this acronet page or this bigbaer page for huge character entity guides. They always begin with an ampersand and end with a semicolon. Ì hope this post made ¢

Server Crash – August 4th

Aug 6th, 2009 Posted in Blogging, Computers, Technology | no comment »

I have been with QualityHostOnline since 2005 and have never had trouble like the last two days. Below is a rundown of what happened. What it doesn’t tell you is that ALL databases were lost forever. I had to restore my sites from backups meaning a few lost files (due to the convenience of CMS/Wordpress, I sometimes create/edit posts and add images directly online). Also there were problem with DNS clusters that made it impossible for me to restore my  domains until Thursday, August 6, 2009 5:45 PM. I sent my Read the rest of this entry »

White Screen Of Death

Jun 26th, 2009 Posted in Computers, Web Development | one comment »

I was trying to edit the functions.php file in my template when my site disappeared. I tried everything to bring it back, but I could not access my login screen or the actual blog. I had my databases backed up so I didn’t lose any posts, but I messed up bigtime while restoring my site. I saved copies of all the php and css pages that I had modified, but two very important folders were deleted forever. I accidentally overwrote my image directory and my plugin directory with the original template folder.

What really burns me is that I have backups of everything on a computer that quit working a couple of months ago. I cannot start the computer, although I have Read the rest of this entry »

Installing WAMP & Drupal

Feb 23rd, 2009 Posted in Computers, Software, Technology, Web Development | one comment »

Today, I installed my own WAMP server. This is a group of programs including Apache, PHP, and MySQL. In the past, I would ftp files to my webhost and assume that I am not going to mess up anything. With my own virtual server, I can test out sites before they go live. This is important to me, because I am starting a new job this Saturday working as an independent contractor for a local web design firm.

Installing and setting up WAMP was quite easy. In fact, I now wonder why I didn’t do it long ago. It worked well out of the box, but like anything, I had to configure it to fit my needs. You see, when I transfer my Read the rest of this entry »

I was talking to someone today who got the ISPY virus on their computer, even though McAfee was running in the background and said they were protected. After an investigation, it was determined that the only way they could have gotten the virus was through Read the rest of this entry »
