Become An Ex-Smoker

Jul 22nd, 2010 Posted in Lifestyle, Website Reviews | 13 comments »

As some of you know, I am an ex-smoker. Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions that I have ever made, both for my physical health and the health of my pocketbook. Although I have not had a cigarette since November of 2007, I still get cravings. There is a website called Become An Ex that helps people like me to remain an exsmoker. Here is some information from their website about who they are and what they do.

Seventy percent of smokers in America want to quit, but only about five percent of smokers are successful in quitting long-term. Most people just don’t know how to quit.

That’s where EX comes in. The free EX Plan, available at BecomeAnEX.org, teaches smokers how to “re-learn” life without cigarettes. Developed in partnership with Mayo Clinic, as well as input from ex-smokers, EX is a new way to think about quitting that can help smokers become an EX for good.

Every ex-smoker has triggers that make us want to reach for a cigarette. Whenever I get stressed, I think about how much better a cigarette would make me feel.  When I see someone enjoying a puff in a movie, it makes me nostalgic for cigarettes. When my adrenaline is pumping after my wife and I finish doing something fun and exciting, I imagine how good a  cigarette would taste. Finally, whenever I smell cigarettes, I still have the urge to smoke.

Become An EXDon’t get me wrong, I am thankful to be a nonsmoker. I have more endurance, I breathe better,  and food tastes better. However, this doesn’t change the fact that cigarettes still smell good to me. The times when I crave cigarettes most are when I’m stressed, bored, nervous, excited, relieved, or anxious.

At Become An Ex, we are able to create a free personalized plan to quit smoking. From there, members learn the truth vs. myths about nicotine, smoking and addiction. Members also begin to re-learn how to live life without cigarettes while becoming full participants in the community of Ex-Smokers.

There is also an area for health care  professionals and those who want to help a friend break the habit. So whether you or a friend want to re-learn life without cigarettes, give Become An Ex a try.

Disclosure: Become An Ex, through YouCast, provided information to  help facilitate this review. In addition, I will be hosting a giveaway to help promote their service and website.  This post has not been reviewed or edited by anyone other than Larry H. of Cakeblast.

Cakeblast Has A New Blog Design

Jul 18th, 2010 Posted in Blogging, News, Web Development | 5 comments »

I have been redesigning my blog for the last few days and actually running a bit behind on my posts as a result. I am still not quite finished with the redesign, but for the next couple weeks am going to concentrate on catching up on posts. I have several reviews and giveaways that I will be posting next week so stay tuned.

I was actually planning on writing a Pillow Pets post last night, to be published this morning, but the transfer of my site from Apache to my server didn’t go as smooth as I had hoped it would. I think I had accidentally saved an earlier version of an open installation of my template before doing the transfer.

I spent about three hours fixing the CSS on my live site, but now it is all running fine as far as I can tell. I didn’t change the size of my main content area because I didn’t want t o break the layout of all my other posts and pictures. The main thing I want to improve is the header, but the one I now have is growing on me.

I still have a full backup of my previous site design in case I get nostalgic and want to see it the old way again someday. In the meantime, Welcome to the new Cakeblast. Please comment with any suggestions for improvement.

Amazing Music Box Is The Perfect Gift!

Jul 14th, 2010 Posted in Products, Reviews, Website Reviews | 9 comments »

Christian music box - Crucifix with two dovesI was recently introduced to a website called Amazing Music Box and was very impressed with what I saw! I didn’t realize that so many fabulous and unique styles of music boxes existed!

There are music boxes for babies, sports fans, newlyweds, anniversary celebrations, and many that would make a perfect gift for any occasion. Each box will be customized with the purchaser’s choice of music. Choices range from You Are My Sunshine music boxes to Masquerade from Phantom of the Opera and many musical accompaniments in between.

Teddy Bear on the Moon - Sorrento Music BoxThe baby and children’s Sorrento Music Boxes are among my very favorites. They come in a variety of beautiful designs and sizes, each with colorful inlays.  These musical boxes would make a stunning gift for a baby shower or child’s birthday.

All of the Amazing Music Box Company’s Serrento Music Boxes are hand crafted and imported from Italy. They come in several different finishes so it is easy to find the perfect box to suit any individual style.

Football Music Box for Sports FansFor the sports enthusiast, Amazing Music Box offers golf and other sports themed music boxes. Even if a football fan didn’t usually like music boxes, it would be hard for them not to enjoy keeping their watch and rings in a football themed box that plays The Star Spangled Banner. If someone I knew had an aversion to their decorative boxes playing music, I would consider a gift choice such as the Green High Gloss Golf Theme Jewelry Box. Then again, I have a hard time imagining anyone who doesn’t like any type of music.

Dark Blue Reuge Music BoxIf the normal 18-note musical selection seems too limited, Amazing Music Box also carries a selection of 36-Note Reuge Musical Boxes. These boxes are gorgeous works of art and customers get to add their choice of  Rouge Movement.

There is free shipping on any of the Reuge Musical Boxes and no added fees for the addition of Reuge Movements. Free shipping also applies to any order over $150 and there is also a non-breakage guarantee.

I often have trouble thinking of the perfect gift for anniversaries, birthdays, and Christmas. A music box is wonderful for the person who seems to have everything. There are many different choices and a handcrafted music box is something that will be cherished for years to come.

Amazing Music Box carries more elegant music boxes than I can mention in one post. Choices vary from the traditional Ballerina Musical Boxes that play Nutcracker Suite to music boxes shaped like musical instruments. At Amazing Music Boxes you will find an amazing gift for someone special in your life.

Disclosure: Amazing Music Box provided monetary compensation in exchange for this post. However, the words, ideas, and opinions expressed in this article all belong to Larry Harms from Cakeblast.

Jawbone Icon Bluetooth Headset Review and *closed* Giveaway: A+ Fathers Day Gift for 2010

May 30th, 2010 Posted in Giveaways, Reviews, Technology | 398 comments »

Two Jawbone Products - Rogue and The CatchWant to make this Fathers Day really special? Buy that special Dad in your life one of the hottest tech accessories available! The Jawbone ICON Headset is easy to pair with any Bluetooth enabled smartphone, comes in six sleek designs, and offers military-grade noise filtering. I have been testing out The Rogue and it has made talking on the phone much easier and more comfy.

I’ll admit, I have never owned a cell-phone headset. I have seen the headsets with the little loops and always feared they would be incredibly uncomfortable after a few hours. Although the Jawbone offers the earloop as a choice, it is unnecessary. The small, 100% recyclable box comes packed with an assortment Jawbone ICON Case Open - Different Size Earbudsof earpieces that fit inside the ear.  There is an earpiece to fit practically anybody, and they are much more comfortable than I would have ever imagined.

Not only is this Bluetooth headset light (8.2 grams) and comfortable, it stays in place. I tried jumping around and shaking my head like a wet dog, but the Jawbone still rested securely in my ear. After a while, I forgot that I was wearing it until a call came.

The back of the bluetooth headset earpiece has an easily-accessible button for answering and hanging up calls. Two-clicks of the button will redial a number. If you press the button while not on a call, it tells you the remaining charge on the headset.

Larry H. Wearing His Jawbone ICONThe Jawbone ICON can be charged by plugging the included USB cable directly into your computer. In addition, the ICON comes with a wall charger that has a USB socket. When paired with an iPhone, the ICON displays a battery meter that reveals the charge remaining on your headset. It takes about 40 minutes to charge the Jawbone and the charge lasts for up to 4.5 hours of talk time.

A small slider switch makes it easy to turn the ICON on and off. Using a switch rather than a button also makes it easy to tell at a glance whether the headset is on. Of course the small LED light in the back does this as well.

There is no need for a volume control dial on the headset, because the ICON features Set-It-And-Forget-It technology. This means that after setting the volume during the initial setup, it will normalize volume automatically until you reset it. Some callers tend to talk louder than others so I am often changing the volume on my phone. However, my Jawbone has done a wonderful job of keeping everyones’ voices at an acceptable volume level without having to make adjustments.  The Noise Assassin makes everyone easier to hear whether their voice is booming or subdued.

The Jawbone site explains Noise Assassin Technology better than I can..

“Originally developed for use in tanks and helicopters, Jawbone ICON™’s NoiseAssassin® is a proprietary technology that eliminates background noise from mobile phone conversations. Jawbone is the only Bluetooth headset with a Voice Activity Sensor (VAS) that actually feels your speech, which helps Jawbone distinguish your voice from background noise. As a result, Jawbone offers better audio quality than any other headset on the market.”

Screenshot of Jawbone Promo VideoHere is a link to a really cool video demonstrating how well Noise Assassin eliminates background noise. It features a person talking with bunch of kids playing in the background. Normally, a phone conversation would be impossible in those conditions. However, after NoiseAssassin is turned on, the sound of screaming kids is virtually eliminated.

I have only used the ICON around my own loud child, but the technology benefits both me and anyone I am trying to talk to. With the headset, we can hear each other better than when I use the phone by itself. As an added bonus, it keeps my hands free to shoo the children away when necessary. Every parent needs an ICON headset!

Anyone who talks on the phone while driving should also own a headset. Seven states have made it illegal to use a phone while driving without using hands-free devices. Several more states are currently considering similar laws. The Jawbone ICON provides a safe driving experience with the best outside wind / noise reduction available anywhere.

Screenie of MyTalk Apps For Jawbone ICONPerhaps the coolest thing about the Jawbone ICON is the MyTalk software platform. Users can not only update their firmware online, but can also personalize their headset. For instance, the ICON talks in a variety of different voices and languages, offering information ranging from remaining charge, to reciting the phone numbers of incoming callers.

I am also able to listen to streaming music and podcasts, and even hear turn-by-turn directions by using the A2DP application. The update was easy to install and One Winner Will Receive This Jawbone "The Catch" best of all it is free! This update also makes it possible to control the volume from the headset by holding down the talk button during a call or while listening to audio.

The Jawbone ICON is available for $99.99 at the Jawbone online store or anywhere fine bluetooth headsets and accessories are sold. Pictured to the right is “The Catch” which is pearl white. It is one of six excellent designs that the ICON is available in.  This is a photo of the actual Jawbone ICON that is being given away. I am shipping it myself and will try my best to get it to the winner by Fathers Day on June 20, 2010.
