*closed* Fabulous Prize Pack Giveaway Celebrates 31 Days of Oscar On TCM

Feb 18th, 2010 Posted in Giveaways, Television | 460 comments »

My wife and I love watching Turner Classic Movies. This month TCM is celebrating 31 Days of Oscar by playing 360 Academy Award nominated and winning movies uncut and commercial free. To make the celebration even more fun, each of the 360 movies are linked to the last by a shared actor or actress.  This clever arrangement is inspired by the 6-Degrees of Kevin Bacon game. The Academy Award

31 Days of Oscar began February 1 with Only When I Laugh starring Kevin Bacon. The event will complete a 360° loop back to another Kevin Bacon film at 4 am March 3-4 with Diner. Even though we are three weeks into the festivities there are still plenty of amazing films to watch before the fun ends.

For instance, tonight at 8:45 pm CST, TCM is showing A Free Soul (1931) starring Clark Gable and Leslie Howard.  Of course, 8-years later the two actors would star together in Gone With the Wind!

Sunday evening on February 21st, TCM will be broadcasting On The Waterfront (1954) starring the inimitable Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint in her first theatrical role. This will be followed by Hitchcock’s North By Northwest (1959) starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint!

These are just a few of my favorite films that Turner Classic Movies has lined up this month. On TCM’s website you can see the top 10 Oscar-winning films as chosen by their visitors. You can also vote for your favorite films and have the results added to the poll!

Another fun feature of TCM’s website this month is the Mood Sharing widget to find great quotes that will suit any mood you are in! Then you can share your quote with your Facebook friends or through an ecard!

What better way to top off a month of watching some of the greatest films of all time, than to watch this years Academy Awards?  The movies nominated for this most prestigious award are the future classics that will be admired and talked about for years to come.

This year the 82nd Annual 31 Days of Oscar Prize Pack!Academy Awards will be co-hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. The show will air LIVE on Sunday, March 7th at 7 pm CST on ABC. Turner Classic Movies is allowing one of my readers to celebrate the Academy Award festivities in style by sponsoring this awesome giveaway!

TVLand Needs To Rediscover Its Purpose

Feb 14th, 2009 Posted in Entertainment, Peeves, Television | no comment »

Today, I watched a vintage episode of The Brady Bunch on television. While viewing the Bradys’ classic shenanigans, I began thinking about how cool it would be to have a television channel dedicated to old TV shows. The channel I was watching airs a handful of old shows occasionally. But it is mostly dedicated to reality programing and the intermittent movie. The channel I was watching is called TVLand..hmmm.

Why does a channel called TVLand play movies? Why does a channel called TVLand dedicate itself to reality programming? Movies and Reality are not the first (or second) things that Read the rest of this entry »

CakeBlast Oscar Picks For Feb. 22, 2009 (part 2)

Feb 6th, 2009 Posted in Entertainment, Movies, Television | no comment »

I just read a story about this years Oscar nominees being told to expect a “big surprise” this year. It seems that the Academy is concerned about the low ratings it received in 2008. I seriously think that the low ratings were due to Read the rest of this entry »

CakeBlast Oscar Picks For February 22, 2009

Feb 4th, 2009 Posted in Actors, Actresses, Entertainment, Movies, Television | 2 comments »

I will not pretend that I have seen all the movies up for Oscar consideration. Going to the movies is a rare treat and  camcorded theatrical films are horrible quality (not to mention illegal) so I do not download them. Anyway, it is fun to pick winners based on my knowledge of movies and past winners.

Best Actor in a Leading Role

I am going to go with Mickey Rourke. Sean Penn would have been my pick, but he won the last time he was nominated in this catagory (for Mystic River). Rourke is finally going to get his due after some turbulent years. They are two of the finest actors of our times, but this shall be Rourke’s year.

Best Actor In A Supporting Role

All the hype is centering on Heath Ledger, but I am going to go with Josh Brolin for his role in Milk. I loved Heath Ledger and felt his performance in Brokeback Mountain was Oscar Worthy. I even mentioned the possibility in a previous blog of an Oscar for Ledger helping The Dark Knight surpass Titanic as the #1 box-office film ever. but a posthumous Oscar only pays respect to a great artist. This prestigious award could make Brolin’s career.

I am sure the Academy considered Brolin’s star turning role as George Bush in Oliver Stone’s W, but instead of nominating him for a best actor award, they chose to give him accolades for his performance in a movie that they want to pay respect to without disrespecting many great performances in other films.

Best Actress in a Leading Role

I believe Kate Winslet will win this category.  Winslet has been nominated several times in the past, but has never won an Oscar. This year she took home the Golden Globe for best actress and I am hoping she will get her first Academy Award as well. Winslet is one of the best actresses of our generation and certainly deserves it.

Best Actress In A Supporting Role

My prediction is that Amy Adams will win this award for her role in Doubt. In this movie, she plays a nun who accuses a priest of abusing a black student. The Academy loves these types of roles, and Adams has been on a role in recent years with both commercial (Enchanted) and critical (Junebug) successes.

Best Animated Feature Film

Wall-E is considered by many critics to be one of the best animated films ever. I thought it was great, and it is also the first film I ever took my toddler to see in a theater. I consider this to be a no-brainer.
