How To Make Second Life A Whole Lot Prettier
Second Life (SL) is a very popular MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). As opposed to other MMORPGs, SL takes place in modern times and involves normal people living their lives. It is more like the SIMS than World of Warcraft (WoW).
Unlike the Sims, players in Second Life are able to exchange money that they make in the game for real USD cash. People can create clothes (and skins) for characters, that they sell. Players can also create sounds, objects, and houses that they sell. Other people work jobs such as DJing clubs, tending bars, sales clerks, escorts/prostitutes, and just about anything people do in the real world for money.
Second Life is a very realistic looking game. People look like people, water looks like water, and fairies look like..okay, some people make their characters look like angels, dragons, and all to often go overboard with muscles or breasts. People do not have to be themselves, so most people choose to be either gorgeous or fantastical. There are people who choose to be fat though, and some choose to be children. It is pure escapism for the SL community.
I don’t play Second Life, but my wife has been since 2006. She recently learned a way to manually adjust the lighting, that makes everything look amazingly better than any of the default settings. Yes everything looks good regardless, but trust me, it can be much better. Years ago, I thought my dial-up internet was good, until I got a cable connection.
The Second Life settings here change everything and can be saved! If you play Second Life, I highly recommend that you try it out!
For the best results when viewing your avatar (and others) Belleza recommends the Windlight Settings below.
These settings were developed by Caliah Lyon and generously shared with the SL community. You can visit Optimizing Windlight for complete instructions with accompanying screenshots.
Alternately you can download these settings from http://www.divshare.com/download/4218568-97c and place the file in C://Program Files/Secondlife/app_settings/windlight/skies on your computer.
*Note: For Mac users to use the XML provided by Caliah, simply go in your Applications folder and locate the Second Life application, right click on it and select “Show Package Content”. Then drop the XML in Resources/app_settings/windlight/skies

Keep in mind that these are only recommendations. You can continue to change bits here and there to suit your particular skin and look to your own personal taste. With these settings, a face light is no longer necessary; however the CG 4.1 is the preferred choice for many people and is distributed by the very generous Cognitive Gears free of charge. ????
Also keep in mind that each time you log back into Second Life you will need to choose your new windlight settings. They will not be retained upon logging out.
