New Music Monday : Blunt Mechanic – Aluminum and Light

Jun 7th, 2010 Posted in Music Monday | 2 comments »

Blunt Mechanic is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Ben Barnett (Kind of Like Spitting). They released their debut album World Record in April 2010 on Barsuk records. Barnett’s music veers from shoegaze to lo-fi indie psychedelia. He is my favorite type of lyricist, an authentic wordsmith who doesn’t need to tell a story to describe a feeling. All 12 songs from World Record can be listened to for free on Blunt Mechanic’s MySpace Page. I recommend this album for fans of Sonic Youth, Pedro the Lion, Marcy Playground, Beat Happening, and Dinosuar Jr.

Below is the video for Blunt Mechanic’s first single Aluminum and Light.

#NMM – Peggy Sue / Watchman

May 16th, 2010 Posted in Music Monday | 3 comments »

I didn’t have a video up last week. I havn’t been listening to very much new music lately. I have mostly been playing a lot of Califone, Scout Niblett, Regina Spector, Manchester Orchestra, and Brand New on my iPod.

However, I heard a British band for the first time the other day that I want to share. They are called Peggy Sue and they just released their debut album Fossils and Phantoms last month. My New Music Monday selection for this week is their first single of that album. It is called Watchmen!

For more info and songs to listen to, visit Peggy Sue on Myspace.
You can also visit the Official Peggy Sue website for pics, blog posts, and the scheduled dates  for their upcoming United States tour.

#NMM – Fanfarlo “Harold T. Wilkins”

May 3rd, 2010 Posted in Music Monday | 4 comments »

I just got the 2009 Fanfarlo album Reservoir yesterday. I haven’t had much of a chance to listen to it, but I like what I have heard so far.

I love this British band’s  sound and enjoy using the album as a soundtrack for my life. The lyrics tell stories filled with metaphor, yet are teeming with enough detailed imagery that the meaning remains evident. Here is a link to the Fanfarlo lyrics to Harold T. Wilkins (the video below).

Yesterday, I finally downloaded the album to my iPod. I will certainly be listening to a lot more Fanfarlo in the coming weeks .

NMM – Sick of Sarah Video and Chance to Win a Guitar from SingingFool

Apr 25th, 2010 Posted in Music Monday | one comment »

I received an email this week from a website called Singing Fool with a subject line that reads Win a Guitar! Watch a New Video from Justin Bieber & More! I almost didn’t open it, because as talented as Justin Bieber is, I’m not a fan of his music. The chance at a guitar enticed me though. As much as I love my acoustic-electric Takamine EG363SC, I would love to win a new guitar. Therefore, I enter most guitar contests that I run across.

I opened my email and saw that the contest is to win an acoustic guitar signed by a band called Sick of Sarah. I clicked over to the contest page and a music video started playing. The song is called Paint Like That off of their self-titled album which is available on their website. Needless to say, I was blown away by the all girl 5-piece band that is Sick of Sarah.

I knew right away that this would be my New Music Monday selection. I embedded the video for a song called Bittersweet here, even though I enjoyed Paint Like That even more. This is because anyone who enters for the guitar will be greeted with the song Paint Like That. I highly encourage you to listen to both songs and buy the album if you like what you hear. If Justine Bieber can sell a gajillion records, surely these girls can earn a Gold record.. I wonder how Sarah would like them apples?
