MM – The Foundry Field Recordings

The Foundry Field Recordings are a great band from Columbia, Missouri led by vocalist/guitarist Billy Schuh. They are on Emergency Umbrella Records, an indie record label featuring many talented bands. This video for Holding The Pilots/Holding the Facts is 3 years old, but it deserves to be seen by more people.

Music Monday – Dirty Projectors

Dirty Projectors are an experimental rock band from Brooklyn NY. They have been around since 2003, releasing 7 full-length albums. Their most recent album is on Domino Records and is titled Bitte Orca. My Music Monday selection is the track Useful Chamber. The song has no official video, but someone on YouTube made a visually stunning collage of videos that he set to the track. I think it is worth sharing..

Today was a “themed” Music Monday from Keeping Up With The Kellys. Participants were asked to go to http://www.songmeanings.net and click on Random Song Facts. Then we were to find the video for the song that appeared and post it along with some random facts about it.

All I discovered from the random facts about this track, were a few tidbits about the album title “Bitte Orca” which is  repeated several times in the song Useful Chamber. Singer/guitarist Dave Longstreth stated to Pitchfork “The word ‘bitte’is just a German word for please, and ‘orca’ is the carnivorous whale. And I guess you know, there’s not really a literal meaning to draw out of the phrase. But I like the way the words sound together. I feel like there’s some kind of sense just in the relation between the two..”

I think there is a lot more to it than that. The song can be interpreted a million different ways and I think Longstreth just wants to let the song mean different things to different people. After all, isn’t that the great things about art?

Art is an expression, not a definition.

New Music Monday – Lost In The Trees

Lost in the Trees is an “orchestral folk pop” band led by composer/vocalist Ari Picker. The lyrics are beautiful, often sad, and always poetic. Lush melodies perfectly complement Picker’s sensitive voice. This is the first single off of their first full-length album All Alone In An Empty House on Anti-Records.

I hope you enjoyed “Walk Around The Lake.” Two more of their songs can be streamed on Lost In The Tree’s Facebook Page. You can buy All Alone in An Empty House on CD for $13.99  at Amazon, or for $7.99 you can buy the MP3 album.

MM: The #1 Song When I Was Born

Aug 9th, 2010 Posted in Music Monday | 5 comments »

I have been participating in a fun Music Monday meme at The Kelly Korner for a few weeks now. Every other week she picks a topic, and we choose a video based on that topic. Today’s topic was “What was the #1 song on the actual day you were born?”

I went to www.Bobborst.com and looked up the top song for the day I was born. I expected a disco song and I was correct. On August 30, 1975 the number one song in the country was Get Down Tonight by KC and the Sunshine Band.  I felt like posting the Afrodisiacs cover of the song because I saw them perform it live nearly 15 years ag0, but no..here is the original -- enjoy :)

For my New Music Monday selection, I am choosing a song from Brooklyn NY band The Drums. This laid back band has a great vibe that is quickly hurtling them towards mainstream recognition. They released their self-titled debut in June of this year. For more information including tour schedule, visit The Drums on MySpace.

Music Monday – The Proclaimers

Jul 26th, 2010 Posted in Music Monday | 5 comments »

The Kelly Korner has themed Music Mondays every other week. Todays theme is to pick a  song you would sing at karaoke. I used to enjoy singing karaoke, and here is the video to one of my favorite songs to sing. From the 1988 album Sunshine On Leith, here is The Proclaimers with I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).

Amazingly, these guys are still together after all these years. They just released a new album called Notes and Rhymes in 2009, although I have never heard the album.
