Today’s New Music Monday Pick is from Lucy Wainwright Roche. Her songs are introspective and sometimes sad, but always beautifully written and sung. The former teacher has a bachelors in creative writing and an MA in General Education, but left this career to pursue music in 2007. She has released two amazing EPs and is currently working on her first full-length album. For more info go to Lucy Wainwright Roche’s MySpace Page.
It is hard to talk about Lucy Wainwright Roche without mentioning her exceptionally famous and talented family. Her mother, father, half-sister, and half-brother are all extraordinary musical artists.
Her father Loudon Wainwright is a notable musician and actor. Older fans may remember him as Captain Calvin Spalding from the television series M.A.S.H. Newer fans may know him as the obstetrician in the Judd Apatow’s film Knocked Up which Loudon also composed the music for along with musician Joe Henry.
Lucy Wainwright Roche’s older half-siblings Martha and Rufus Wainwright are huge stars that have released numerous critically and commercially successful albums. Their mother was singer/songwriter Kate McGarrigle, whom Loudon eventually divorced. Lucy’s mother was Loudin’s second-wife Suzzy Roche, singer for 70’s female Irish trio The Roches.
It is clear from listening to Roche’s album that when God was dishing out talent to the Wainwright family, he didn’t leave Lucy out. If anything, he gave her a double-helping. I am a big fan of the Wainwright family and am happy to see another offspring following the family tradition.

They may not have the catchiest name in the music biz, but their music is infectious. They don’t play songs that get stuck on repeat in my head. Instead, this Seattle 5-piece band play a fresh style of indie rock that begs repeated listening in my car or on my ipod.

Sea Wolf is a Seattle band that was formed in 2007 by singer/songwriter Alex Brown Church. The recently released White Water, White Bloom is available in stores and on Amazon. The band’s new single Wicked Blood (below) has cryptic lyrics sang over a dark but lush soundscape. For the sake of comparison, imagine a regal blend of Built To Spill and The Killers. To learn more about this band, browse to Sea Wolf ’s website.

MGMT is a psychedelic / electronic pop duo from Brooklin NY. Their first album Oracular Spectacular, was named the best album of 2008 by NME magazine. They have supported bands such as Radiohead and Beck during their 2008 tours and have also performed to much acclaim at festivals such as Bonnaroo and SXSW. They also made a notable appearance on Yo Gabba Gabba during the episode titled Art.
I chose MGMT as my New Music Monday pick, based on the video below. It is a perfect Halloween video featuring a frightened child and the band in costume. The lyrics are insightful and the song would be great no matter what time of year. I look forward to the album Congratulations, which is expected to be released in early 2010. Until then, we have Kids..enjoy!
