New Music Monday – Lucy Wainwright Roche —-> Snare Drum
Today’s New Music Monday Pick is from Lucy Wainwright Roche. Her songs are introspective and sometimes sad, but always beautifully written and sung. The former teacher has a bachelors in creative writing and an MA in General Education, but left this career to pursue music in 2007. She has released two amazing EPs and is currently working on her first full-length album. For more info go to Lucy Wainwright Roche’s MySpace Page.
It is hard to talk about Lucy Wainwright Roche without mentioning her exceptionally famous and talented family. Her mother, father, half-sister, and half-brother are all extraordinary musical artists.
Her father Loudon Wainwright is a notable musician and actor. Older fans may remember him as Captain Calvin Spalding from the television series M.A.S.H. Newer fans may know him as the obstetrician in the Judd Apatow’s film Knocked Up which Loudon also composed the music for along with musician Joe Henry.
Lucy Wainwright Roche’s older half-siblings Martha and Rufus Wainwright are huge stars that have released numerous critically and commercially successful albums. Their mother was singer/songwriter Kate McGarrigle, whom Loudon eventually divorced. Lucy’s mother was Loudin’s second-wife Suzzy Roche, singer for 70′s female Irish trio The Roches.
It is clear from listening to Roche’s album that when God was dishing out talent to the Wainwright family, he didn’t leave Lucy out. If anything, he gave her a double-helping. I am a big fan of the Wainwright family and am happy to see another offspring following the family tradition.
