New Music Monday – Califone
Califone has been around since 1998, but I am including them in my New Music Monday post for two reasons. First of all, I have only recently heard of this amazing and unique band. Secondly, they have recently released a new album called All My Friends Are Funeral Singers. Even though the band has been recording since the breakup of their singer Tim Rutili’s previous band Red Red Meat, the album is still brand new.
Today’s New Music Monday pick is the video made for their first single off of …Funeral Singers. It has a sad melody and dark lyrics that provide part of the soundtrack to a film that will debut at Sundance in 2010.
After hearing this song, I decided to check out some more of Califone’s music and now I am hooked on this band. I was excited to learn about the upcoming movie! Here is some information about the upcoming film that I gathered from Califone’s label Dead Oceans.
Directed by Califone frontman Tim Rutili, All My Friends Are Funeral Singers tells the story of a fortune teller who lives and works in and old house crowded with ghosts. When a mysterious light appears in the woods, the ghosts realize they are trapped and begin to rebel. Califone have screened the film alongside live performances on their latest tour, but Sundance will serve as the film’s official world premiere.
