As 2009 comes to a close, many of us are making resolutions. One of my personal resolutions is to drink fewer soft drinks and more water. I also want to encourage my 4-year old son River to drink more water, but he doesn’t care about the health benefits of choosing this perfect beverage. Fortunately, there is now a brand of water made especially for kids that has him screaming for WAT-AAH!
WAT-AAH! comes in four varieties, each packed with particular enhancements such as electrolytes and minerals to benefit brains, bones, body, and energy levels. I first heard about WAT-AAH! a few months ago, and was very intrigued by the labels which are designed to appeal to kids and make them want to drink this healthy, sugarless beverage. I am surprised that I had not heard of them earlier, because there is a Jonas Brothers video on YouTube with over 275,000 views featuring the young stars drinking WAT-AAH between songs.
About 6-months ago, WAT-AAH! began a campaign where they sent out free samples to numerous schools and Moms. The idea was to see if kids would choose WAT-AAH instead of sugary colas, juices, and fruit flavored drinks. The “WAT-AAH! Challenge” has been a stunning success!
When our family was offered the opportunity to take the WAT-AAH! Challenge, I didn’t know what to expect. River has never been a huge fan of pure water, and he is very fond of his juices. It is easy to see why! Besides the sugary sweet taste, juice labels and fruit punch packaging is designed to appeal to kids. Until WAT-AAH! came about, water had always seemed quite boring in comparison.
I placed the WAT-AAH in the fridge next to his juices and kool-aid and waited for him to discover the bottles. He immediately spotted the bright, colorful vessels and said, “what’s that?”
When I asked River whether he wanted his juice or one of the new beverages with the cartoon kid yelling “Drink WAT-AAH!” on the label, he chose the pink bottle of WAT-AAH! After taking a few healthy gulps, River said he “likes WAT-AAH!” Now, when he pretends to go shopping, WAT-AAH! is one of the first things on his list.
I tried WAT-AAH and thought it tasted about the same as the bottled water we normally drink. However, River has never shown much interest in other bottled water brands. WAT-AAH! uses clever bottles to entice children like River to drink it. The Moms (and kids) who designed the WAT-AAH bottles should be commended. I also think the idea of pumping oxygen into the ENERGY variety to make it energizing is brilliant!
I want to point out that River typically drinks sugar-free Kool-
Aid. Unfortunately, sources ranging from ABC News to Web MD have reported that artificial sweeteners may alter a person’s metabolism and cause weight gain. Incidents of childhood obesity and diabetes have reached epidemic proportions. Getting kids to drink pure water is the only really good choice to stifle this alarming trend. WAT-AAH is the best way that I’ve seen to accomplish this.
By drinking WAT-AAH! kids can have a fun beverage without all the potentially harmful additives. The bottles are 100% recyclable and BPA Free! The WAT-AAH website offers a list, organized by state, of the numerous stores that carry it. The drink can also be purchased at Amazon as a 12-pack for $12.00 + S/H
